Unit 6.7: “Eat Your Garbage?!”: Cycling of Energy and Matter Through Food Webs

In this unit, students explain to reticent students how a lunchroom composting scheme benefits a local farmer. Students discover how decomposers living in compost piles cycle matter from food waste into the air and soil, how plants (the base of the farm food web) use matter from the air, water, and soil to make food through photosynthesis, and use a model to explain why farmers need to add fertilizers like compost to their fields.

Unit Challenge Question: How can collecting food scraps help produce fresh food?
