Mi-STAR Gains State, National Recognition for Excellence

Mi-STAR has been recognized as a strategic STEM education program that promises to ensure a good return on investment.

Governor Rick Snyder’s MiSTEM Advisory Council, made up of business, education and philanthropy leaders, partnered with Change the Equation to identify programs that meet “rigorous design principles for effectiveness” and will improve STEM education in Michigan. In a July 20 press release, the council listed Mi-STAR among six STEM programs that made the cut. Three of the programs, including Mi-STAR, were developed in Michigan.

To achieve this designation, Mi-STAR underwent an exhaustive evaluation by STEMworks, an online clearinghouse that highlights STEM programs achieving high standards of excellence. STEMworks is an arm of Change the Equation, a consortium of Fortune 500 CEOs committed to promoting PK-12 STEM learning.

Having Mi-STAR added to the STEMworks list is a great achievement, especially since Mi-STAR is not yet even three years old, said Michigan Technological University Provost Jackie Huntoon. Endorsement by the MiSTEM Advisory Council can serve as a prerequisite for state funding, and STEMworks recognition tells potential donors nationwide that Mi-STAR is worthy of support.
